The Tradeoff

between Lunchtime & Wages

In order to maintain a higher level of performance while at work, a worker's wellbeing is essential. However, many inhumane rules and designs exist in FCs: first, when employees take lunch breaks, a number of them express that there is insufficient time for rest and hot meals. A longer lunchtime is frequently viewed as time away from work and lost wages. Some employees also stated that they did not wish to converse with others during lunch and simply desired solitude.

To address the aforementioned issues, we created a dystopian interaction between lunch and work time in the hope that people would realize that employees are not robots because they have many needs and require care.

DESIGNER

[anonymized for review]

The design of the Tradeoff focuses primarily on visual stimulation and pressure. It is difficult to ignore the alerting reminders of a potential trade-off between lunchtime and earning additional income. By emphasizing the potential trade-off, the design encourages individuals to choose the extra money and forgo lunch. Conveyor belts are used to deliver lunches to workers to keep them at their stations during lunch, thereby reducing the amount of time they spend away from work and preserving their working hours.
